Community Service

The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is strongly committed to community engagement as an integral part of its mission in Higher Education. UMM’s community service programs are implemented through a variety of initiatives aimed at empowering and supporting society, while providing an avenue for students and faculty to apply knowledge gained in the classroom. UMM’s programs are carefully crafted to address real-world needs in fields such as health, education, economy, social welfare, environment, technology, and culture. This approach ensures that each community engagement activity makes a significant and direct impact.

The service framework at UMM is divided into several main categories, including Faculty Engagement Programs, Student Engagement Programs through Student Community Service (PMM), and partnerships with external organizations. Faculty Engagement Programs involve professors from various faculties focusing on applied research to solve societal issues. Within this program, faculty members act as advisors and mentors for community members, ensuring that the solutions provided are sustainable and tailored to local characteristics.

Additionally, there is the Student Engagement Program, or PMM, designed as a platform for students to directly engage with communities. Through PMM, students conduct field surveys, develop activity plans, and implement programs related to their respective fields of study. This program encourages students to enhance their communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills in real-world settings, while also fostering social responsibility and leadership. PMM is a flagship program that merges student development with direct community contribution.

UMM also maintains strategic partnerships with external organizations to broaden the scope of its service, especially through programs in collaboration with government agencies, industry, and community organizations. Through these partnerships, UMM can access a range of resources that help optimize service activities. For example, in the area of environmentally-friendly technology, UMM has worked with relevant agencies to develop and implement biogas technology using organic waste in villages around Malang.

Funding for UMM’s community service programs comes from two main sources: internal university funds and external funding. Internal funds are managed by UMM's Directorate of Research and Community Engagement (DPPM), which allocates resources based on the university’s strategic priorities for community service. To further support these initiatives, UMM actively seeks grants from external sources, including ministries, donor organizations, companies, and international bodies. This diversified funding model not only strengthens the capacity of UMM’s service programs but also supports research that produces innovative solutions for communities.

UMM’s systematic approach to community service highlights the university’s commitment to sustainable development with tangible impacts. With a structured framework for programs, funding, and organization, UMM has successfully carried out a wide range of engagement activities that benefit communities. As a university known for its character, professionalism, and Islamic values, UMM continues to strengthen its vision by empowering society through real, relevant, and sustainable contributions across multiple facets of life.
